SCARBOROUGH — Susan Rundell, a senior at Scarborough High
School, has retained her top national ranking in Academic Decathlon following
completion of qualifying events in all states.
Rundell scored 9,213 of a possible 10,000 points
to help Scarborough capture its eighth consecutive state title, March 7 at
Deering High School. In a March 15 Current story, Rundell expressed doubt that
her score would stand against students from California, who had yet to test for
nationals. However, while top scholars from the Golden State posted scores good
enough for spots 3-5 on the United States Academic Decathlon board, the best
came no closer than 23 points to Rundell’s score, based on testing in 10
academic disciplines related to this year’s topic, the Age of Imperialism.
Rundell’s tally was second best in the state championship
round, behind only Clare Zhang, of James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, who scored 9,241.2 points. However, despite Zhang’s score, Taylor High
lost the Texas Academic Decathlon championship to Pearland High School. That
means Rundell will go to the USAD national competition April 25-28 in
Albuquerque, N.M., as the top-ranked participant in the nation.
The Scarborough High School team is trying to raise the
$9,000 it needs to send it’s nine-member team to the national event. To donate,
