SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough
Land Trust has named Kathy Mills as its new executive director.
Mills
comes to SLT from Maine Audubon, where she has directed the grants program for
seven years. Previous positions include public relations and fundraising at
Maine College of Art and Bowdoin College. Mills is a founding board member of
The Good Life Center at the homestead of Helen and Scott Nearing in Harborside.
In 2003, she was an apprentice with John Bliss and Stacy Brenner at a farm in
Cumberland. John and Stacy are the farmers at Broadturn Farm, owned by the land
trust.
A
graduate of Smith College, Mills is a Maine native and lives in Yarmouth. She
will begin at SLT in late March.
Jack
Anderson, president of the board of directors of land trust, said, “We are
fortunate to have been able to recruit Kathy. Her skills and experience in
fundraising, nonprofit administration, conservation and the farming community
will be invaluable in helping SLT grow and move forward.”
“Scarborough
has some extraordinary natural resources, and I’m thrilled to join an
organization that is working to protect those resources and to connect more
people to the land,” said Mills.
Kathy
succeeds Marla Zando, who served the land trust for more than six years as its
first paid staff member, first as stewardship coordinator and then as executive
director. The land trust was founded in 1977 and has worked with the residents
of Scarborough to protect more than 1,000 acres.
