REGION — At its 2011 annual meeting, the
Greater Portland Council of Governments (GPCOG) recognized the “best practices”
of each town in The Current’s coverage area – Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and
South Portland.
In conjunction with Portland
METRO, the South Portland Bus Service was lauded for “Best Practices
In Regional Collaboration and Improved Service.” As GPCOG noted, the two
transit services worked together to create a Regional Monthly Pass, allow
riders of each system to travel seamlessly throughout areas served by each
provider.
South Portland and Scarborough
were both recognized for “Best Practices in Regional Planning and
Collaboration,” along with the governments of Gorham and Westbrook, the
Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation System, the Maine Department of
Transportation, the Maine Turnpike Authority and HNTB Corporation, in
Westbrook.
Together, the businesses,
agencies and municipalities have hammered out an “East/West
Corridor Feasibility Study,” which, in GPCOG’s words, “seeks to integrate
future regional transportation, economic development, growth management and
infrastructure investments through the application of sound sustainability
principles.”
Meanwhile, Cape Elizabeth was singled out “Best
Practices in Citizen Participation & Communications” for its implementation
of a Communications Strategy designed to encourage public participation at open
meetings and distribute information on municipal services and local issues on
the Internet.
