SCARBOROUGH — Following
unanimous appointments at the Aug. 16 school board meeting, nine new faces will
join the staff of the Scarborough School Department when classes start next
week.
Positions filed
include a K-2 guidance counselor, along with four teaching posts at the high
school, three at the middle school and one at Eight Corners Primary School. The
new hires include:
Joanne Abrams (K-2
guidance counselor): Previously of School Administrative District 7
(Saco/Dayton) and Regional School Unit 21 (Kennebunk/Kennebunkport), Abrams
holds a master’s in counseling from University of Southern Maine, having
previously earned a bachelor of arts in history and German studies and a
masters in education from Harvard University. Her base salary for the newly
created position will be $58,378.
Hilary Chase (SHS math teacher): The holder of a bachelor of science in
chemistry and a master’s degree in teaching, both from University of Maine,
Chase has taught previously in the South Portland and Freeport school
departments. She will work part-time (0.8 full-time employee, or 32 hours/week)
in this new position for $51,248.
Kokou Nyanutse (SHS French teacher): A former employee of Regional School Unit
57 (Lincoln) and Regional School Unit 2 (Farmingdale), Nyanutse holds a
bachelor of arts in geography from the University of Lome´ and a master of
science in maritime resource management from the University of Quebec at
Rimouski. For the job, created by a retirement, he will earn $53,784.
Erin Landry Fowler (SHS art teacher): A new teacher who completed her student
teaching at Scarborough High School last year under lead art teacher Joanne
Allen, Fowler holds a bachelor’s degree in printmaking from Monserrat College
of Art in Beverly, Mass. Full-time salary for a first-year teacher in
Scarborough is $32,948 but Fowler newly created position is for 0.4 full-time
employee, or 16 hours per week.
Daniel Wiley (SHS English teacher): Wiley will fill a position created by a
recent transfer, entering the pay scale at $36,884. He previously taught in
Hudson, N.H. and holds a bachelor's degree in English teaching and a master's
degree in teaching from the University of New Hampshire.
Kate Gaudet (SMS science teacher): Gaudet will earn $35,348 in a job created
be a realignment of teaching staff. She holds a bachelor's degree in ecology
from the University of Maine and has completed an extended teacher education
program at University of Southern Maine. Gaudet previously taught in the York
school system.
Abbey Manchester (SMS science/math
teacher): A new teacher
stepping into another job created by
staff realignments, Manchester holds a
bachelor of science in elementary education from University of Maine at
Farmington and did her student teaching in Madison and Skowhegan. She will make
the starting salary of $32,948.
Jennifer Libby (SMS physical education): In this new half-time position, Libby
will earn $53,784. She holds a bachelor's degree in physical education and a master’s
in teaching and administration, both from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
She has previously taught in Westbrook, at Deering High School in Portland, and
in Greenwich, Conn.
Kathryn Fiorini (Grade 2 teacher at Eight
Corners): Previously an educational
technician in the district, Fiorini will make $32,948 to fill a vacancy created
by a one-year leave of absence. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology
from St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt.
