South Portland break-in leads to arrests

SOUTH PORTLAND — Two men were arrested Sunday afternoon in connection with the burglary of prescription medication from a Broadway apartment.

Police were called to 919 Broadway at 2:20 p.m. after a witness saw a man enter an apartment through a second-floor window, according to a release from the South Portland Police Department. Once officers arrived on the scene, the victims returned home and confirmed that medication had been taken from their medicine cabinet. One of the witnesses identified the man who entered the window as an upstairs neighbor.

After the suspects refused to come outside of an upstairs apartment, a search warrant was authorized and police entered the building's apartment 3. The initial search turned up nothing, but eventually an officer located a man hiding in a very small crawl space. He refused to exit, but he was finally subdued. Rourke Sparks, 26, of South Portland, was arrested and charged with class B burglary and theft. He is being held at the county jail on an unknown bail.

Another male was also found under a tarp in the same small crawl space. Derrick Splude, 27, of South Portland, was initially charged with refusing to submit to arrest and possession of drugs, but the district attorney dismissed those charges Monday.
