SCARBOROUGH — According to Carol Rancourt, only two artisans
met the Nov. 30 deadline to apply for wood from “Elsa the Elm,” felled from its
Oak Hill home Oct. 15 after more than 175 years.
Money raised from the sale of objects made from
Elsa was to seed a new tree fund, to help maintain decorative trees throughout
the community.
“It looks like we are not going to get a huge
amount of money,” said Rancourt, at the Dec. 7 council meeting.
However, Rancourt said that a picture of her
holding a baseball bat made from Yarmouth’s famous “Herbie” elm prompted a
recent pharmacy conversation, in which a local resident suggested making bats
from Elsa, to raise money for local Little League teams.
“That may be a very interesting project,” said
Rancourt, adding that Elsa wood might also be used to make a bench, display
case, or other object for the new Wentworth Intermediate School.
“it would be nice to dedicate something in the
new school made from a tree that came frm the same Wentworth family property,
so we are looking into that, as well,” said Rancourt. “We will keep you posted
on where and when Elsa appears next.”
