City names officer of the year

Scott Corbett cited for ‘consistent, proactive and thorough performance’

SOUTH PORTLAND — Officer Scott Corbett has been named the South Portland Police Department’s Officer of the Year for 2011.

Corbett joined the department in 1998 and is assigned to second-shift patrol with his partner, K-9 Harley.

“Scott is recognized within the department for his consistent, proactive and thorough performance, always looking beyond the obvious in any investigation or traffic stop,” Chief Edward Googins said in a press release. “This mindset has allowed Scott to become proficient at locating and seizing drugs and other proceeds. Scott also displays a professional and compassionate persona, able to assist people within the community, particularly those in crisis.”

According to Googins, Corbett was a key part in developing and taking a suspect in an unsolved robbery into custody and identifying fraudulent state inspection stickers, among other cases. Corbett also provided drug interdiction training to all department personnel, and is a member of the Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team.

Corbett was selected by the department’s lieutenants and sergeants from a list of officers who were selected during the past year as Officer of the Month. He was nominated three times during 2011 and selected twice for that recognition. Corbett was also honored as the department’s Officer of the Year in 2007. Corbett will receive two days off, with pay, a personalized plaque, and an award pin to be worn on his uniform.
