SOUTH PORTLAND — The James Otis Kaler School of Inquiry and
Exploration has won a $1,200 grant from the School Ground Greening Coalition, a
branch of Portland Trails created in 2002. Principal Diane Lang said the money
will be used by “site-based liaison” Angela Emery to “create more natural and
engaging play and learning spaces in the school yard.”
Emery, who has had three children attend Kaler,
has logged seven years as facilitator of the school’s greening committee,
coordinating the annual United Way Day of Caring effort to improve school
grounds. This year, the committee planted
six trees, while also created a stump path and log seating for students.
“Now that she is our
site-based liaison, she gets a small stipend and some money to help,” said
Lang. “This is fantastic.”
