Rudy’s on the Cape revival

CAPE ELIZABETH — Rudy’s on the Cape was the subject of a special workshop session of the Cape Elizabeth Planning Board Tuesday. Because that meeting took place after the deadline for this week’s print issue of the Current, full coverage was posted on the website (www.keepmecurrent.com) Wednesday.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Pat Carroll, of Portland-based Carroll and Associates, was slated to discuss proposed changes to a site plan approved for former owner Mary Page in 2008. Carroll’s presentation was expected to include the renovation plans, as well as reconfiguration of the property entrance onto Route 77. Plans are to build a new, 80-seat restaurant.

Rudy’s, a combination convenience store and diner located near the entrance to Two Lights Road, has been a fixture on Route 77 since 1963, having originally opened as Bagley Grocery Store in the late ‘50s. In early July, Page, owner for the past seven years, sold the property to Running Tide Road resident Paul Woods, operating as 517 Ocean House LLC, for a reported $349,000. The town has it assessed at $338,600.

Chuck Barnes, who ran Rudy’s for the past three years on an option-to-buy lease, said he had offered $320,000. He closed up shop Sept. 25.
