Rabbit habitat
The town of Cape Elizabeth has teamed with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to manage a portion of the Winnick Woods open space as shrubland habitat, primarily for New England Cottontail rabbits.
According to a town press release, the Town Council on Oct. 10 approved the joint management plan for approximately 15 acres of the 70-acre Winnick Woods parcel, located off Sawyer Road, and for an adjacent 10-acre parcel that is part of the Fish and Wildlife's Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge.
"This is really kind of a great boon to us that the Wildlife Management Institute has stepped up and said that they would help with the costs of managing this area for wildlife habitat," Town Planner Maureen O'Meara told members of the council. "We're getting some free expertise and we're getting some money to do the work we need to do, and we're not really obligated to do anything but let them on the property."
Managing the southwest segment of Winnick Woods for a New England Cottontail habitat is part of the property's master plan.
