Cape child nearly drowns in Scarborough

SCARBOROUGH — A 7-year-old child from Cape Elizabeth was released from the hospital and  “doing well” following a near drowning July 12 at Wassamki Springs Campground, Scarborough police said last week.

According to a post on the police department’s Facebook page maintained by dispatcher Jamie Higgins, the unresponsive child was carried to shore by his mother and a 13-year-old, where a lifeguard preformed CPR. After the child was revived he was taken to Maine Medical Center for further treatment.

The child was part of a group of “day campers” on a field trip with Cape Elizabeth Community Services. Scarborough police declined to name the lifeguard involved.

“At the family’s request, we will not be releasing the name of the child,” said Officer Craig Hebert, who noted, “the incident is still under investigation.
