Jean-Marie Caterina,
owner and president of Caterina MacLean Group, the Maine Real Estate Network,
has announced plans to seek election as a Democrat to Maine House District 128,
representing inland Scarborough, the seat now occupied by Heather Sirocki, a
Republican.
The seat was wrested away
from Democrats in the 2010 Republican surge, when Sirocki, a dental hygienist,
beat Brian Dell'Olio, 2,512-2,168.
"I don't like the
current tone of politics in the state," wrote Caterina, in a press release
announcing her candidacy. "I don't like it when on party controls all of
government. Like most people, I am looking for a government that presents
positive solutions for the issues facing Maine people today.
Before entering the real
estate field in 2003, Caterina taught Latin in both public (York High) and
private (Waynflete) schools, worked as a child protective social worker for the
Department of Health and Human Services and served as assistant Maine's
commissioner of labor from 1985-1987, until she left to become a fundraising
coordinator for U.S. Sen. George Mitchell's re-election campaign. She also
logged time as an affirmative action officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield and
as director of special projects at Creative Works Systems, a social service
agency that aids the mentally disabled.
"I feel that I bring
a spectrum of experiences with both private and public sectors that I can bring
to the table in advocating for those policies which are beneficial for the
people of Scarborough," wrote Caterina.
A University of Maine
graduate (with a B.A. in political science), Caterina holds a master's degree
in social welfare administration from Boston College. She is married to her
real estate partner, Geoff MacLean.
Although a Democrat,
Caterina said, "I don't follow anyone blindly." In a February 2009,
letter to Sen. Susan Collins, posted to her now-abandoned blog, "Cat's
Comments" Caterina wrote, "You and Senator Snowe truly represent what
is best about Maine!"
