CAPE ELIZABETH — Walter Gibson of Saco is Cape Elizabeth's new harbormaster,
according to a press release from the town.
The appointment of Gibson, who started July 1, was announced
by Police Chief Neil Williams on June 30. Gibson succeeds Roger Long,
harbormaster since 2005, who retired this month.
Gibson is a military veteran and holds a merchant marine and
U.S. Coast Guard captain's license, Williams said. He is a licensed master
Maine Guide, and operates a sports fishing charter service, WickedGoodOutdoors.
As harbormaster, Gibson will be responsible for
administering mooring permits and renewals in Cape Elizabeth waters. The
part-time position has a $3,305 stipend budgeted for the next fiscal year.
Long, a naval architect, retired this month to sail the East
Coast and beyond as a featured contributor to the e-zine sailboatowners.com.
Long called it his last cruise, "which I don't intend to end ... until
someone has to come and carry me off the boat," he said in the release.
During his tenure, Long organized and computerized Cape
Elizabeth's mooring permit system, including establishing GPS coordinates for
all moorings, the release said. "Roger did a wonderful job squaring things
away," Williams said. "He will be missed."
Long said the first leg of his cruise will take him to the
southern coast of Nova Scotia and the St. John River system aboard the sailing
vessel Strider, which will also serve as a studio for further writing projects.
